An artistic reverie at the Eugène Delacroix Museum
Published on 15 October 2019, dans Exhibitions
Your stay at the Grand Hotel Saint-Michel places you close to a very special attraction in Paris; the Eugène Delacroix Museum. Located in the Place Fürstenberg, it immerses you in the French Romantic artist’s world. The museum is housed in the former apartment and studio where Delacroix spent the last years of his life.
Over 1,000 works at the Eugène Delacroix Museum
For lovers of the great artist, but also for those who wish to discover his work, the Eugene Delacroix Museum is a must. The painter lived here from 1857 until his death in 1863. Some 1,300 works have been collected since the museum was established in the 1930s, including paintings, prints and drawings, as well as manuscripts and various items of memorabilia. This collection enables us to understand the artist through the subjects that fascinated him. For example, we can see the paintings he created following his return from his trip to Morocco, a place which inspired him for the rest of his life. Works by artists he befriended, admired, or who were influenced by him, such as Géricault and Fantin-Latour, are also displayed.
The preserved Delacroix home and studio
Thanks to careful restoration and maintenance, 6, Place Fürstenberg has retained the feel of its period. The museum is accessed by a monumental staircase that Delacroix himself had installed. All the architecture has been preserved as it would have appeared in the artist’s time, making it a precious vestige of old Paris. From the three rooms of the upstairs apartment you will head down to the studio and then to the garden, where the view was much enjoyed by the painter. All these spaces are home to the museum's collections. The works of contemporary artists are also occasionally exhibited amidst the flowers and fruits.
The Eugene Delacroix Museum is only a 15-minute walk from our Grand Hotel Saint-Michel via the Boulevard Saint-Germain.
